Dej Loaf Featuring Big Sean
“Back Up”
#83

With her insinuating voice and realist attitude, Dej Loaf deserves to ride a beat and a hook as good as these for as long as she wants, even if she doesn’t go anywhere special with it. Of course, if she’d been given the chance to expand on her rap instead of having to make room for Big Sean’s two left tongues, she might have proven to be more than a voice with attitude. If this becomes a hit, maybe she’ll get another chance. But how much you wanna bet her label credits Big Sean for any success and Dej Loaf for any failure?

Sam Hunt
“Break Up In A Small Town”
#90

Don’t dare call this country-rap. This is recitation with a sung chorus, and it’s awful. Just because he got away—barely—with one spoken verse number, doesn’t mean Hunt should double-down on this clumsy slab of self-pity.

Brothers Osborne
“Stay A Little Longer”
#99

The song is average, and though the guitar solo has its moments, especially when it returns to the main riff, the Bros can’t resist showing off and going on longer than they deserve. As a country jam band they’re grittier than Zac Brown, which is a blessing, but they’re still a jam band.
